About
Blairo Borges Maggi is Brazil’s agriculture minister. Before that he was a senator and governor of the state of Mato Grosso.
In the Data
Maggi and other family members appear in Appleby records as beneficial owners of Amaggi & LD Commodities International Ltd., a Cayman Islands company registered on Sept. 9, 2010, about five months after Maggi ended his term as governor of Mato Grosso.
The Cayman company, created to operate in commodities and futures exchanges, reported that its Brazilian firm Amaggi & LD Commodities SA was the only shareholder, Appleby’s documents show. The Brazilian company was a joint venture of the Andre Maggi Group and the Louis Dreyfus Commodities Group to “originate and trade soybeans and corn” from Brazil. The Maggi family has been ranked among the world’s biggest soy producers as well as one of the richest families in Brazil.
Documents show that the Cayman Islands company estimated that when it was “fully operational” it would have gross sales of $100 million from trading in agricultural commodities. The declared reason for incorporating the entity in the Cayman Islands was the “possibility of obtaining easier access to international funding and to leading mercantile exchanges.”
In October 2017 Amaggi & LD Commodities International Ltd. was still active according to the Cayman Islands corporate registry. It had changed its original name to Amaggi Louis Dreyfus Zen-Noh International Ltd.
RESPONSE
Maggi said in a statement to ICIJ’s media partner in Brazil, Poder360, that he is not and has never been a direct beneficiary of Amaggi Louis Dreyfus Zen-Noh International Ltd.
